Banning ChatGPT for homework rarely works — children use it anyway, just without telling you. What actually helps is teaching them to use AI as a tutor, not a ghost-writer.

Should I ban my child from using ChatGPT for homework

I hear this question from parents almost every week. My honest answer: an outright ban rarely holds, because the tool is already sitting on their phone. What works better is setting out what counts as fine and what does not, rather than banning everything at once.

What counts as learning, not copying

The line is simple. If a child types a question and copies the answer straight into their homework, that is copying. If they ask the AI to explain the reasoning and then write the answer in their own words with real understanding, that is genuine learning through AI. What matters is who actually types the final answer.

Five house rules

  • Ask AI to explain, not to answer — for example, "explain the method, do not give me the answer".
  • Always type the final answer yourself, even after understanding it from the AI.
  • Tell the teacher honestly which parts used AI to think through — there is nothing shameful in that.
  • Check at least one fact before trusting it, since AI can sound very confident while being wrong.
  • Never use AI where a teacher has explicitly banned it — school rules always come first.

How to use AI for coding homework specifically

For programming homework, I recommend one rule above all: never type "write this code for me". Instead, paste in the code you have already written yourself and ask "why does this fail". That turns the AI into a tutor pointing at the problem, not a worker doing the assignment. The child still has to read their own code and understand what actually broke.

Signs your child is leaning on AI too much

Watch for a child who cannot explain their own work out loud, or who cannot solve a similar problem at all without the AI open. Both are signs AI has replaced their thinking rather than supported it. The fix is simple: have them attempt a similar problem again with the AI app closed.

The best AI for homework is the one that teaches how to think, not the one that hands over the answer.

If you would like your child to understand AI more deeply than just using it for homework, we run an AI for Kids course that starts from the basics. Parents who want the bigger picture before talking with their child can join the AI literacy course for parents alongside them. Frequently asked questions

Can my child use ChatGPT for every subject's homework

Yes, as long as they use it to get an explanation and write the answer themselves. Some subjects may explicitly ban AI use, so always check with the teacher first.

How do I know if my child copied an AI answer wholesale

Ask them to explain out loud why the answer is correct. If they cannot explain it at all, it was likely copied without understanding.

What age should we start talking about AI house rules

As soon as your child has their own access to an AI tool. The earlier the conversation starts, the sooner good habits form.
