The short answer to Python or JavaScript for kids is that most children should start with Python, then move to JavaScript once they are ready to build things that run in a browser.

Should my child learn Python or JavaScript first?

Once a child has moved past block-based coding, the next question is which real language to learn first. I recommend starting with Python as the first real coding language for most children, because its syntax reads easily, sits close to English, and the first results are not complicated by web page appearance — children can focus purely on logic.

How are Python and JavaScript different?

Both are real languages professionals use daily, but they suit clearly different work.

Choose based on what your child wants to build

There is no single right answer for every child — it depends on the kind of result they want to see.

  • Drawn to data and numbers, curious how AI works — start with Python
  • Loves seeing things move on screen, wants their own site — start with JavaScript
  • Not sure yet — start with Python; its fundamentals transfer to other languages most easily later

When should a second language start?

I recommend a child have six months to a year of solid grounding in their first real language before starting a second one. Fundamentals like variables, conditions and loops transfer quickly across languages once they are solid in the first one. Adding a second language while the basics are still shaky usually just creates confusion.

Can they learn both at the same time?

Some children can, especially from around thirteen once abstract thinking is fluent. For most children, though, I recommend mastering one language before starting the next. The goal I keep in mind is learning both languages by around fifteen, which is plenty for whatever direction they choose later — there is no need to rush both in primary school.

A second language is not a race. It is choosing the right tool for what your child wants to build.

If you are unsure whether your child is ready for a real coding language, read our comparison of Scratch and Python and a child's first Python program. For a mapped-out path, there is the Python Essentials course for the Python track and the Jump game course for the JavaScript track. If your child wants to go fully into web development, the Web Development course carries straight on from there. See the full course listing at the courses page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Python harder or easier than JavaScript?

For children, Python is usually easier at first, since its syntax reads closer to English with fewer symbols to remember. JavaScript has more details around braces and semicolons to watch.

If my child wants to make games, which language should they learn?

It depends on the kind of game. Browser games that play instantly suit JavaScript, while games built on a dedicated platform like Roblox use that platform's own language, Lua — choose based on what your child actually wants to build.

Is it hard to move from Python to JavaScript later?

Not particularly. Once the logic of programming is solid from Python, moving to JavaScript is mostly learning new syntax, not starting to think all over again.
